It was in this organization that Nico was able to explore and expand his knowledge on the craft of storytelling behind the lenses may it be through short films, or documentaries that earned him prestige and awards not just in school, but outside the country as well. In 2002, he produced and directed the documentary “EdukhaSYON: Poverty and Education” that earned him and his team the Hoso Bunka (Broadcast Culture) Foundation Prize in NHK’s 29th Japan Prize International Program Contest, which was held in Tokyo, Japan. The documentary competed with major broadcasting companies in the world such as BBC and CNN. It told the story of a young boy’s struggle and pursuit for proper education despite the odds brought about by poverty. This was later on screened in other countries such as Switzerland, Thailand, and aired on Philippine national TV. After graduating from the University of Santo Tomas with a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Communication Arts, Nico went on to work for the Philippines’ largest television network, ABS-CBN Broadcasting Corporation. He started out as a Writer and Segment Producer for the network’s News and Current Affairs Department, and worked for the daily primetime newscast, TV Patrol World. In 2005, Nico moved to California, USA to attain a Master of Fine Arts degree in Motion Pictures and Television from the Academy of Art University in San Francisco. He was then mentored by the most-respected names in Philippine cinema such as the multi-awarded film and television director Maryo J. Delos Reyes, internationally acclaimed screenwriters and producers Ms. Michiko Yamamoto and Mr. Raymond Lee, award-winning cinematographer Mr. Jose Batac Jr., and emerging film and TV editor, Mr. Sherwin Pescasio. His latest film, “Tatang” was a part of the 2009 Cinemalaya Philippine Independent Film Festival and has also been played in New York City, San Francisco, San Diego and Philadelphia, USA as well as in parts of South Africa. Nico now works as a director for ABS-CBN.
